Playground and Outdoor Sports Equipment Maintenance in Vietnam’s Tropical Climate
Vietnam is one of the harshest operating environments in the world for outdoor play and fitness equipment. A steel swing frame that lasts fifteen years in a temperate European park can show structural rust in under four years on a beachfront site in Da Nang or Phu Quoc. The equipment is not defective; the maintenance regime has simply not been adjusted for the tropics.
Why Tropical And Coastal Conditions Destroy Equipment Faster
- UV. Vietnam gets 1,800 to 2,600 sunshine hours a year. Unstabilised plastic chalks and turns brittle in 24 to 36 months; UV stabilised LLDPE holds colour 8 to 10 years.
- Humidity. Relative humidity averages 78 to 85 percent and rarely drops below 70 percent. Steel corrodes above roughly 60 percent surface humidity, so most sites sit above the threshold year round.
- Salt spray. Chloride deposition within 500 m of the shoreline can exceed 300 mg per square metre per day, driving pitting under the paint film. Corrosivity class jumps from C2 or C3 inland to C5-M on an exposed beachfront.
- Monsoon. May to October brings 70 to 80 percent of annual rainfall in the south and centre, causing standing water, saturated timber, silted drainage and washed-out loose fill.
A calendar copied from a European manual therefore runs at about half the frequency Vietnam actually requires.
Inspection Regime With Real Intervals
Daily Visual
10 to 15 minutes per playground before opening, no tools. Check for broken or missing parts, glass and sharps, vandalism, exposed foundations, protruding bolts, standing water and worn impact areas under swings and slide exits. Record on a one-page sheet with date and initials.
Weekly Or Fortnightly Operational
45 to 90 minutes. Every 7 days for busy parks and resorts, every 14 days for low-use school yards. Torque-check a sample of fixings, run every moving part through full range, check hanger play, measure surfacing thickness at wear points.
Quarterly (Every 3 Months)
A written inspection of every component, 2 to 4 hours for a medium playground. Within 1 km of the sea, tighten to every 2 months: chloride pitting can go from cosmetic to structural in one monsoon.
Annual Main Inspection (Every 12 Months)
By a competent inspector independent of daily operations: probing at ground level on at least 20 percent of posts, anchorage load testing, remaining timber section, coating thickness in microns, written risk assessment. WINAM recommends March or April, before the monsoon, so repairs finish before the wet season.

Failure Modes And Early Detection
- Ground-line corrosion. Posts rot at the soil interface while the visible section looks perfect. Tap with a hammer and probe 100 mm below finished level on a sample of posts yearly.
- Under-film corrosion. A chip lets chloride in and rust spreads under intact paint. Press suspect blisters: soft or crunchy means active corrosion.
- Binder breakdown in EPDM. Polyurethane binder hydrolyses under prolonged saturation. First sign is loose granules after rain.
- Hanger bush wear. Silent for months, then rapid. Lift the seat and check vertical play.
- Fastener loosening. Mark nut and bolt with a paint line after torqueing so rotation is instantly visible.
Cleaning Methods And Chemical Limits
Cleaning is where well-meaning teams cause the most damage. Salt must be washed off, but the wash must not strip the protection.
- Rinse coastal equipment with fresh potable water every 7 to 14 days. This is the highest return maintenance action on a beachfront site.
- Painted or galvanised steel: maximum 80 bar, nozzle at least 300 mm away, 25 to 40 degree fan tip, never a zero degree jet.
- EPDM or wet-pour rubber: maximum 100 bar, nozzle at least 400 mm away, shallow angle. A close jet tears granules from the binder matrix.
- Plastics: warm water, pH neutral detergent, soft brush. Maximum 60 bar at 400 mm.
Avoid entirely: chlorine bleach and hypochlorite, which attack polyurethane binder and discolour EPDM; alkaline degreasers above pH 11, which saponify powder coating; acidic descalers below pH 4, which strip zinc from galvanised steel; and thinners, acetone or petrol on plastic or coated surfaces. Default to a pH 6 to 8 neutral cleaner.
Touch-Up And Rust Repair
Repair chips within 30 days. On the coast an untreated 5 mm chip can undercut 50 mm of surrounding coating in one wet season.
- Abrade back to sound metal, feathering the coating edge over about 10 mm.
- Degrease with isopropyl alcohol; keep solvent off adjacent plastics.
- Zinc-rich primer at 40 to 60 microns dry film thickness.
- Two coats of compatible polyurethane or acrylic topcoat, total system 120 to 160 microns.
- Do not paint above 85 percent relative humidity or when steel is less than 3 degrees C above dew point.
Specification Choices At Design Stage
Maintenance cost is largely decided before manufacture. Within 1 km of the sea, WINAM specifies hot-dip galvanising to a minimum 70 micron zinc coating plus a duplex polyester powder coat in the marine or super durable class, a system that routinely outlasts single powder coat threefold.
- Stainless steel. Grade 304 is acceptable inland but pits visibly in 12 to 24 months in salt spray. Grade 316, with 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, is correct for coastal fasteners, hangers, chains and exposed trim. The 25 to 40 percent material premium is recovered on the first avoided replacement.
- Powder coat. Super durable polyester to marine specification, minimum 80 microns, over a zinc-rich or galvanised base. Standard architectural polyester is not adequate at C5-M.
- Plastics. Rotationally moulded LLDPE with a UV8 or higher stabiliser package.
- Timber and foundations. No timber in ground contact; use galvanised or 316 shoe brackets on concrete plinths raised 50 mm above finished level with a shed slope.
Record Keeping For Insurance And Liability
In any injury claim the operator must produce the inspection history, and an absent record is far more damaging than one showing defects found and fixed. Keep for at least 5 years, or equipment life plus 3 years: installation certificate and layout drawing; dated daily and weekly sheets with inspector names; quarterly and annual reports with photographs and readings; a defect register with date raised, risk rating, action and closure date; evidence of temporary closure when a unit was out of service; and invoices for replacement parts.

Add a sinking fund of 4 to 6 percent a year for planned replacement of swing seats, ropes and surfacing, which last 5 to 8 years however well maintained. Operators funding at these levels typically reach 12 to 15 years of service life; those who defer face full replacement in 6 to 8 years.
